The best locations to find walleye usually
have some form of rocky bottom. A bottom with jagged and broken rocks of all
sizes will hold more walleye than any other type of cover. The challenge is to
fish close to the bottom without getting snagged. Ordinary slip sinkers are not
effective in these areas. You will constantly be snagged on the bottom.
Slip-bobbers are very effective for these spots. Find out the depth and set the
slip bobber about a foot above the bottom. This will keep you near the fish and
above the snags. Crankbaits and minnow plugs are also popular for fishing in
the rocks. The lip of the crank baits and minnow plugs will usually hit the
rocks on the bottom and bounce off of them. These baits will help you work
along the bottom without getting caught up in snags.
