Fishing for Perch in Marten River Ontario
Fishing Marten River for yellow Perch.
Perch are one of the best tasting freshwater fish. Some Marten River anglers
absolutely love catching perch, while others are annoyed because the perch will
often steal their bait. Most perch are between 6 and 9 inches long, however,
some lakes can hold much bigger fish while others will hold somewhat smaller
fish. Perch fishing is typically best in clear, cool lakes and rivers that
contain rock, gravel or sand bottoms. Weedy, muddy bottomed lakes can hold
large populations of perch, but there usually isn't a big enough food source
for them to sustain a good population of big fish. The weeds give them plenty
of places to hide from walleye, pike and bass, so many more perch survive. With
more perch there is more competition, which leads to smaller fish. In all of
the Ontario great lakes, except Lake Superior, perch grow to some impressive
sizes. In lake Michigan and Lake Erie, 12 to 15 inch perch are not uncommon.
These would be considered jumbo perch. Any perch over 9 or 10 inches is
considered a jumbo.
Tomiko Lake - is located 40 miles
north west of North Bay just a little hike from Marten River Ontario. Tomiko is
a good sized lake with an average depth of 30 feet and fishing is great for
walleye and smallmouth especially in the spring and late fall.
Tomiko Lake good ice fishing, fish for
walleye, perch or pike.
